The Comprehensive Guide to Wheel Bolt Patterns (PCD)

Before you can check wheel offset, backspacing, or brake caliper clearance, a wheel must physically bolt to your hub. The bolt pattern—also referred to internationally as the Pitch Circle Diameter (PCD)—is the primary mechanical gatekeeper of wheel compatibility.

How to Measure Bolt Patterns on Any Wheel

Even Lug Counts (4, 6, and 8-Lug)

Even patterns are simple: measure straight across the center of the wheel from the center point of one lug hole directly through the center bore to the center point of the opposing lug hole.

Odd Lug Count (5-Lug Patterns)

Because no hole sits directly opposite, measure from the center of one lug hole to the far outside edge of the hole directly across from it. That dimension in millimeters or inches equals the PCD.

Common Metric to Imperial Equivalents

Because American and international manufacturers frequently use imperial and metric nomenclature for the same castings, here are the exact conversions:

  • 5x114.3 mm = 5x4.5 inches: Ford Mustang, Honda Civic, Toyota Camry, Nissan 350Z/370Z, Jeep Cherokee.
  • 5x120.65 mm = 5x4.75 inches: Chevrolet Corvette, classic Camaro, Pontiac Firebird.
  • 5x127 mm = 5x5.0 inches: Jeep Wrangler JK/JL, Grand Cherokee, Dodge Durango.
  • 5x139.7 mm = 5x5.5 inches: Ram 1500 (Pre-2019), classic Ford F-150, Jeep CJ.
  • 6x139.7 mm = 6x5.5 inches: Toyota Tacoma/4Runner/Tundra, Chevy Silverado 1500, GMC Sierra, Ram 1500 (2019+).
  • 8x165.1 mm = 8x6.5 inches: Classic Ford F-250/F-350, Chevy Silverado 2500HD (Pre-2011), Ram 2500/3500.

Bolt Pattern Frequently Asked Questions

What does bolt pattern (PCD) mean?

Pitch Circle Diameter (PCD) or bolt pattern indicates the number of lug bolt holes and the diameter of the theoretical circle formed by the geometric centers of those lug studs. For instance, a 5x114.3 pattern has 5 lug studs situated on an imaginary circle 114.3 mm (4.5 inches) across.

How do you accurately measure a 5-lug bolt pattern?

Unlike 4, 6, or 8-lug wheels where you can measure straight through the center hub between opposite studs, a 5-lug pattern has no stud directly opposite. To measure a 5-lug wheel: measure from the center of any stud to the outside edge of the second stud across from it. Alternatively, measure from the center of one hole to the center of an adjacent hole and multiply by 1.7012.

Are 5x114.3 and 5x4.5 the exact same bolt pattern?

Yes, 5x114.3 mm and 5x4.5 inches are mathematically identical. 4.5 inches multiplied by 25.4 mm/inch equals exactly 114.3 mm. Ford, Toyota, Honda, Nissan, Mazda, and Jeep often reference this identical pattern interchangeably.

Are 5x120 (BMW) and 5x120.65 / 5x4.75" (GM) interchangeable?

No. While 0.65 mm seems tiny, mounting a 5x120 wheel onto a 5x120.65 hub places the lug studs in severe bending shear stress rather than pure clamping tension. This can cause sheared wheel studs at highway speeds. Always use the exact engineered PCD.

What are PCD conversion adapters?

PCD conversion adapters are precision two-piece or heavy-duty one-piece billet aluminum wheel adapters that bolt to your car's factory bolt pattern (e.g. 5x100) and feature a second set of studs in a different pattern (e.g. 5x114.3). They typically add 15 mm to 25 mm of spacing.
