The Four Types of Wheel Rubbing
Hearing an ugly scraping noise over dips in the highway or while turning into a steep driveway is every car enthusiast's nightmare. Fortunately, wheel rubbing is rarely an unsolvable problem.
Before picking up any tools, you must accurately diagnose where and under what conditions the tire is making contact:
| Rub Sound & Condition | Probable Contact Area | Severity | Standard Solution |
|---|---|---|---|
| Dull Hissing / Swishing over highway dips | Plastic inner fender liner | Low (annoying, not dangerous) | Heat gun reshaping or trim plastic clip |
| Harsh Metallic Scrape on compression | Outer metal fender lip | High (can cut tire or bend sheet metal) | Fender rolling or add negative camber |
| Grinding / Vibration at full steering lock | Frame rail, sway bar, or cab mount | Medium | Install thin wheel spacer or lower offset |
| Continuous Scraping in a straight line | Inner suspension strut body / spring perch | Critical (will gouge tire sidewall immediately) | Install spacer immediately; DO NOT DRIVE |
1. Fixing Plastic Fender Liner Rubbing
On lowered cars or vehicles with slightly taller tires, the outer shoulder of the tire often rubs the plastic splash shield inside the wheel well over big road undulations.
The "Fender Liner Screw" Mod (Common on VW, Audi, BMW)
Many modern European cars have a prominent metal hex screw holding the plastic fender liner to the metal fender arch right at the 12 o'clock apex.
- Remove this factory screw.
- Push the plastic liner upward above the metal mounting tab.
- Fold the small metal bracket upward flat against the fender with pliers.
- This simple 5-minute modification eliminates 80% of mild rubbing on lowered platforms!
The Heat Gun & Wooden Block Technique
Plastic liners are made of thermal-formable polyethylene:
- Thoroughly clean the rubbed area to identify shiny wear marks.
- Heat the plastic with a garage heat gun set to medium heat until it becomes soft and pliable (do not bubble the plastic or scorch nearby paint).
- Using the flat end of a 2x4 wooden block or gloved hand, push the heated plastic outward into the hollow void behind the liner.
- Hold the plastic in place with a cold wet rag until it cools and sets in its new, recessed shape.
2. Fixing Outer Metal Fender Lip Rubbing
When tires rub the exterior metal fender, the tire sidewall is striking the horizontal inner metal pinch flange manufactured into the fender arch. Left unaddressed, this will slice deep circular grooves into your tire tread or pull the fender outward like a crumpled tin can.
Solution A: Professional Fender Rolling
Fender rolling uses an engineered roller tool bolted directly to the vehicle wheel hub:
FENDER ROLLING PROGRESSION
===============================================
[BEFORE: 90° Factory Lip] [AFTER: Rolled Lip]
| |
| |
---+ [Horizontal Lip] +== [Flattened against outer skin]

(Tire catches edge) (Gains 10-15mm tire room)
- Clean the Inner Arch: Pressure-wash and brush all dirt and road grit from behind the fender lip. Any trapped dirt will distort the outer paint when compressed.
- Heat the Paint: Using an infrared thermometer and a heat gun, warm the exterior fender paint to 120°F to 140°F (50°C to 60°C). Cold automotive clear coat is brittle and will crack; warm clear coat stretches safely.
- Roll in Small Increments: Bolt the fender roller onto the wheel hub. Set the urethane wheel against the inner lip at a slight angle. Roll back and forth across a 12-inch arc, tightening the tension knob slightly after every 3 to 4 passes.
- Result: The horizontal 90-degree metal lip is folded completely flat against the inside of the fender, yielding 10 mm to 15 mm of clear space!
Solution B: Dialing In Negative Camber
If your suspension features camber plates, eccentric camber bolts, or adjustable upper control arms:
- Increasing negative camber by -0.8° to -1.5° tilts the top of the tire inward by 4 to 7 mm.
- This pulls the tire shoulder away from the metal fender lip throughout the entire suspension stroke.
3. Fixing Inner Suspension Strut Rubbing
If the inner sidewall or rim lip is contacting the shock absorber body or coilover spring collar:
- Do not drive the vehicle. Severe inner sidewall contact will cause a sudden highway blowout.
- The Immediate Fix: Install a high-quality hub-centric wheel spacer (e.g. 5 mm or 10 mm) to push the wheel outward away from the strut.
- Ensure your lug nuts retain at least 6.5 full turns of thread engagement (or install extended studs).
4. Fixing Full Steering Lock Scrubbing (Trucks & Jeeps)
On lifted 4x4 trucks (such as Toyota Tacoma, Ford F-150, or Chevy Silverado) running large 33-inch to 35-inch off-road tires, rubbing typically occurs when the steering wheel is turned fully to the left or right:
- Cab Mount Chop (CMC): On Toyota Tacomas and 4Runners, the body cab mount directly behind the front tire contacts wide tires. Off-road fabrication shops cut back the protruding corner of the steel cab mount and weld a recessed reinforcement plate in place.
- Front Bumper / Air Dam Trimming: Plastic air dams and front bumper inner corners can be neatly trimmed with a rotary Dremel tool.
- Caster Alignment Adjustment: Increasing front caster alignment to +3.5° to +4.0° pushes the front wheels forward toward the front bumper, gaining valuable clearance away from the firewall and cab mount.
